On 16th June at ADS 2025 in Manila, the Asia Dengue Policy Working Group (ADPWG) convened a compelling panel discussion focused on dengue testing across the care continuum, moderated by Dr Kristine Alvarado-Dela Cruz (Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases, Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, Philippines). This engaging session brought together a distinguished panel of dengue experts:
Dr Rontgene Solante opened the discussion by shedding light on the clinical realities of dengue in the Philippines. He stressed the importance of early diagnosis to prevent severe dengue cases and fatalities, where decentralised access to diagnostics has transformed the dengue surveillance landscape regarding how dengue cases are reported nationally, increasing dengue awareness and enhancing dengue outbreak surveillance. On the topic of vaccines, Dr Solante acknowledged concerns about antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), which exacerbates symptoms for patients taking the vaccine, but affirmed that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks when supported by consistent, evidence-based public communication.
A/Prof Rukie de Alwis, brought up the limitations of current diagnostic testing in Asia. She emphasised the importance of tailoring diagnostic tools to local epidemiological patterns and called for broader access to genomic and serological testing. Such data would not only support outbreak preparedness but also guide targeted vaccine strategies by identifying high-risk populations.
Dr Raul Destura shared insights into the clinical and public health applications of diagnostics. He explained the limitations of NS1 tests in detecting secondary dengue infections, highlighting the need for serological and molecular tools in parallel. Addressing vaccine hesitancy, Dr Destura emphasised the power of clinician training and effective science communication in delivering clear and accessible scientific information without compromising accuracy.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our esteemed panellists and moderator for their invaluable contributions and to all participants for their thoughtful engagement.
